All beautiful things were born from inspiration...
This painting was inspired soon after I had been asked by “The Whale Foundation” to provide an image for their big annual fund-raising event. The image would be used for the invitations and posters. I would also donate a framed and signed print to be bid on in the silent auction. Of course, I was excited to create something unique for the good of some- thing I believed in (and still do).
The Whale Foundation’s mission is to provide confidential access to mental and physical healthcare professionals and a network of support services designed to restore, promote and celebrate the Grand Canyon River Guiding community. The foundation exists because “Whale”, a Grand Canyon river guide took his own life. Some knew Whale was struggling, but no one knew the depths of his needs. Although this event was tragic, it has created endless inspiration.
Being a river guide myself, I understand many of the challenges that our unconventional lifestyle presents. In the spirit of Whale, I wanted to paint something that would represent these challenges and I wanted to show that there is also hope and happiness, even in the darkest of times.

watercolor and ink / 18x24 inches
Like so many of my paintings, I use Grand Canyon as a metaphor for aspects of human existence. Here, in this painting, the storm and dark colors represent the difficult moments and the negative emotions. We will all experience this, it is inevitable. But, the storm WILL pass. There will be light and sunshine again. If we can endure and persevere, we realize that the storm is only temporary.
The practice is to remember that everything is impermanent. Everything has it’s cycles. Everything will transform, change, evole. When we truly realize this, we begin to enjoy and appreciate every moment. We do our best in every moment. In living this way, we can become the light shinning through the clouds, not just for ourselves, but for everyone and all living things around us. And, in this way, we can pass the inspiration, again.
